The Various tiger paintings by Jakuchu portray them not as ferocious beasts,
but rather as somehow humorous or cute. The figures seem almost more like cats than tigers.
Jakuchu lost his Kyoto studio to the Great Tenmei Fire of 1788, and a few years later retired to a hut at the Sekiho-ji temple in suburban, Fukakusa, where he remained until his death on October 27, 1800. This painting is still kept at the temple.
